POX BACK AT WALLINGTON
The Squirrel Pox Virus (SQPV) has been confirmed again at Wallington.
Wallington Hall, known widely for its thriving population of red squirrels, which can be viewed by visitors from a purpose-built hide, has been struck down for the second time this year with the pox.
This is devastating news for Wallington's red squirrels as several healthy squirrels had recently been seen and it was hoped that the previous outbreak of the pox was over and the population was beginning to thrive again. However, this new outbreak has already struck down several squirrels and visitors were horrified to see a poxed squirrel on the feeders near the hide.
It is imperiative that any poorly squirrels are removed immediately from the population, to reduce the risk of further spread of the disease.
THEREFORE, IF YOU SEE ANY POORLY, DISORIENTATED SQUIRRELS AT WALLINGTON PLEASE CONTACT THE WARDEN OR NRS IMMEDIATELY.
SQUIRREL POX IS AN HORRENDOUS DISEASE WHICH IS HARMLESS TO GREY SQUIRRELS BUT FATAL FOR RED SQUIRRELS.
A RED SQUIRREL WITH POX USUALLY APPEARS DISORIENTATED AND SLOW. IT WILL HAVE SCABS AND LESIONS AROUND ITS EYES, EARS AND MOUTH. ITS EYES WILL APPEAR SWOLLEN AND MAY BE ALMOST CLOSED.

POX CONFIRMED CLOSE TO KIELDER FOREST
Squirrel Pox Virus has been confirmed at Sidwood near Keilder Forest.
Two greys were sighted in the vicinity, close to Hareshaw Linn, last month. These have since been dealt with.
All red squirrel conservationists are etremely concerned with the number of pox outbreaks in the region over the past few months. Let's hope this one can be contained.
On a brighter note, healthy red squirrels have been sighted in both Belsay and Bolam Lake recently, allaying fears that the earlier outbreak of pox confirmed in both areas had wiped out the whole population in both areas.
PLEASE REPORT GREY SQUIRREL SIGHTINGS IMMEDIATELY. PLEASE ALSO KEEP AN EYE OPEN FOR POORLY, LETHARIC OR DISORIENATED RED SQUIRRELS AND REPORT THESE TO US IMMEDIATELY, TOO.

SUSPECTED POX OUTBREAKS
Confirmation of two suspected Squirrel Pox outbreaks are awaited after dead red squirrels were found in Gosforth Park and Swarland.
This is another blow for the region's populations of red squirrels, on the back on several other squirrel pox outbreaks to be confirmed in the last few months, including Wallington, Belsay, Bolam, Bellingham and more recently Woolsington.
Gosforth Park and Swarland are both good habitats for red squirrels, however, recent influxes of grey squirrels has now taken its toll. Let's hope the outbreaks can be contained.
IF YOU SEE GREY SQUIRRELS IN THESE OR OTHER AREAS PLEASE REPORT THEM TO US IMMEDIATELY!

SQUIRREL POX CONFIRMED IN WOOLSINGTON, NEAR NEWCASTLE AIRPORT
Testing on a dead red squirrel, found in a garden in Woolsington in January, has confirmed fears of a Squirrel Pox outbreak in the area. Several residents have recently reported that they had not seen any reds for a while. Two grey squirrels were caught in January in the same garden.
A Leaflet drop by Ponteland Red Squirrels resulted in more residents agreeing to have traps and we can now confirm that an additional FOUR grey squirrels have been caught within the past week.
"Hopefully, more residents will report sightings and we can clear the area of greys completely, giving a chance for our much-loved native reds to return to the village." reported Penny of Ponteland Red Squirrels.
PLEASE REPORT ALL GREY AND RED SIGHTINGS TO NORTHERN RED SQUIRRELS.
